SEEKING ABSTRACTS FOR A GASH TWG STUDENT POSTER SESSION TITLED “CASE HISTORIES FOR EVALUATION OF POTENTIAL GEOLOGIC AND SEISMIC HAZARDS” TO BE HELD AT THE 67TH ANNUAL AEG MEETING IN PHILADELPHIA, PA

The Geologic and Seismic Hazards Technical Working Group (GASH TWG) of AEG seeks abstracts for a student poster session to be held during the 67th Annual AEG Meeting titled “Case Histories for Evaluation of Potential Geologic and Seismic Hazards”. The poster session, which will complement a symposium of the same title that will be convened by the GASH TWG at the Annual Meeting, will showcase student research related to evaluation of potential geologic and seismic hazards using a variety of surface and subsurface investigative techniques. Depending upon characteristics of the geologic setting, examples of hazards that may require evaluation could include, but are not limited to, faulting, landslides, karst and resultant subsidence in limestone terrains, dissolution of rock types other than limestone, certain types of volcanic events, and poor-quality foundation materials at sites for construction of critical infrastructure such as bridges, roadways, tunnels, mines, pipelines, dams, and nuclear power plants. Students should present the results of their research related to the hazard evaluations and discuss the data collected for the evaluations. The information presented in the posters should address how the data were used to detect, characterize, and evaluate the potential hazards and to formulate plans for hazard mitigation, if applicable. Because results of the hazard evaluations and information related to recommended mitigation actions often need to be communicated to stakeholders who are not geoscientists, the posters could also discuss the approach developed to explain the results and the recommended mitigation actions to members of the public, industry representatives, federal agencies, state agencies and county and city representatives, and other interested parties.
